About the Artist

Billfish have lives too. They want clean water, ballyhoo and to swim freely. Unfortunately each year there are thousands of people determined to interrupt the billfish's solitary quest for lunch and procreation. They arrive on beautiful sportfisherman. They don't want to hurt anybody, just roughhouse for a little bit and then gently say good bye. But what about the life of these piscatorial play toys ? Do they have good days ? Are there days they just want to stay home in bed ?

No one has better captured the plight of the billfish better than Karen Rhodes. As a young girl she was always entranced with the Outer Banks and sea life. Always sketching as a child, Karen discovered her gift early on. After concentrating on her art classes in highschool she attended Virginia Commonwealth University Commercial Art program. Not forgetting her love for the Outer Banks she decided to move to Ocracoke Island, then eventually settling in Hatteras Village. The Billfishing community has embraced her work enthusiastically. At tournaments, Karen's display booth is frequently mobbed and within a small community of offshore fishermen, she is a bit of a celebrity.

In 2004, karen exhibited alongside 17 famous marine artists at the International Game Fish association Tournament of Art in Ft. Lauderdale, FL. She also works closely with The Billfish Foundation on developing product to be sold to help fund the research for tag and release and biological studies for this species. Trixie has become quite an icon around the globe and Karen is happy to be a part of these organizations so that our children too can have a future in fishing. She creates many products based upon her whimsical drawings, including a line of apparel & accessories exclusively for women & children.

Throughout the year Karen can be found showing her artwork and the "Fun Billfish Art" products that have been created from these images at select Billfish Tournaments and Boat Shows along the East Coast. She opened her first signature store in July 2005 in Hatteras Village, NC. and continues creating new art & unique product lines.

We hope you enjoy her humorous take on the life of the billfish.
